As we head into Saturday, the weather couldn't get much better for June in the Carolinas. Expect a mix of sunshine and a few passing clouds with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 80s.
Expect widespread rain, localized flooding and damaging winds. A few stronger storms could also produce damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph. The tornado threat remains low, but an isolated brief tornado can't be ruled out, especially south of the Metro where a few storms may become more organized.
Rain chances increase overnight for the Carolinas as remnant tropical moisture moves in. Isolated spin-up tornadoes not out of the question.
By Thursday, summer-like heat makes a comeback. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the lower 90s with a mix of sun and clouds. As the day heats up, the atmosphere will become increasingly unstable, setting the stage for scattered thunderstorms to develop during the late afternoon and evening hours. Most of the day looks dry, but by late afternoon our next storm moves in. Any storm that develops could produce brief heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and gusty winds.
By Wednesday morning, any lingering showers will be long gone, and we're in for a much nicer day. Sunshine returns, clouds gradually break apart, and temperatures climb quickly into the upper 80s. It will feel more like summer again, and a steady west-southwest breeze could gust close to 20 mph at times.
Tomorrow, we'll notice a few more clouds moving into the area. While a stray shower can't be ruled out, the better chance for any rain will stay south of Charlotte, and even their coverage looks very limited. For most of us, it remains dry with temperatures staying a little more comfortable thanks to the added cloud cover. Tuesday may end up being one of the more pleasant days of the week before the summer heat ramps back up. Highs tomorrow will be much cooler into the lower 80s.
Thursday marks the beginning of a noticeable heat wave across the Carolinas. We'll see a mix of sunshine and clouds with only a slight chance of an isolated afternoon thunderstorm. Most locations will stay dry as highs climb to around 90 degrees. With humidity remaining high, it with heat index values over 100.
By Wednesday, we start to see a noticeable transition as the moisture begins to pull away from the Carolinas. We'll see a mix of clouds and sunshine throughout the day, and while most locations stay dry, there is still a small chance for an isolated afternoon thunderstorm. Rain coverage will be limited, with temperatures rebounding nicely into the upper 80s.
The best opportunity for more widespread rainfall arrives on Tuesday. Clouds will be the theme of the day helping keep temperatures a little cooler, with afternoon highs settling into the middle 80s. Rain and storm chances increase during the afternoon and evening hours, and while we're not expecting severe weather, any steady rainfall will be welcome news.
By Saturday, the heat is back in a big way. We’ll see plenty of sunshine from morning through the afternoon with just a few passing clouds, and highs will climb right up near 90 degrees. It’ll feel like a classic summer day.
